Conservation
Threats
Understanding what endangers the sanctuary's dolphins and river ecosystem.
Water Pollution
Industrial, domestic and agricultural pollution entering the Ganga can affect water quality, fish populations and the overall health of the river ecosystem the sanctuary's wildlife depends on.
Fishing Nets
Dolphins can become accidentally entangled in fishing gear, particularly gill nets, resulting in injury or drowning. This remains one of the most direct threats to individual dolphins.
Boat Traffic
Increasing boat activity can disturb dolphins and their habitat through noise, wake and the risk of propeller strikes, particularly in narrower or shallower river channels.
River Ecosystem Changes
Changes in water flow, sediment patterns and habitat structure can affect the availability of prey and suitable habitat for dolphins, gharials, otters and other aquatic wildlife.
